Virgin PTFE Raw Material Properties

What is Virgin PTFE

Virgin PTFE (unfilled polytetrafluoroethylene) is pure PTFE resin without glass fiber, carbon, graphite or metallic fillers. It retains the full inherent advantages of PTFE polymer. It is widely used for sealing gaskets, O‑rings, insulation parts and corrosion‑resistant components. Compared with reinforced filled PTFE, virgin PTFE features superior chemical inertness but suffers obvious cold flow and creep under continuous load.

Key Physical & Mechanical Properties

  • Density: 2.14‑2.20 g/cm³
  • Tensile Strength: 20‑35 MPa
  • Elongation at Break: 200‑400 %, much higher than filled reinforced PTFE
  • Compressive Strength: 12‑22 MPa; notable cold‑flow (creep) occurs under long‑term static pressure
  • Hardness (Shore D): 50‑58
  • Coefficient of Friction: 0.08‑0.15, excellent self‑lubricating performance
  • Wear Performance: Good for low‑load static application; poor anti‑wear and anti‑creep property for high‑pressure dynamic service. Sustained stress will produce permanent deformation and potential seal leakage risk.

Thermal Properties

  • Continuous Operating Temperature: ‑200 °C ~ +260 °C
  • Melting Point: 327 °C
  • Thermal Expansion Coefficient: High thermal expansion rate; dimension change under wide temperature swing shall be considered during gasket design
  • Thermal Conductivity: Low thermal conductivity, acts as thermal insulator

Chemical Resistance

Virgin PTFE delivers maximum chemical resistance among common engineering plastics. It resists almost all acids, alkalis, organic solvents, oils, fuels, corrosive gas and liquid media.

No reaction with strong oxidants, hydrofluoric acid and strong alkaline solutions. Suitable for chemical, pharmaceutical and food‑contact working environments.

Note: Only few special fluorinated solvents can affect virgin PTFE under extreme high‑temperature conditions.

Virgin PTFE VS Reinforced Filled PTFE

Virgin PTFE provides best chemical compatibility and flexibility. It is preferred when medium corrosion resistance is the top priority.

Reinforced filled PTFE improves creep resistance, wear and compressive performance, at the cost of partial chemical resistance and flexibility. Engineers shall select grades according to pressure, temperature and process medium.

Typical Industrial Applications

Virgin PTFE raw stock can be processed via die‑cutting, laser cutting, CNC machining and moulding. Common finished parts include ptfe back up rings, sealing washers, insulation spacers, diaphragm sheets, chemical lining components and food‑grade sealing elements and custom ptfe parts. Widely deployed in chemical equipment, food & beverage machinery, pharmaceutical processing, instrumentation and general static sealing systems.
