PEEK
PEEK Raw Material Properties
What is PEEK
PEEK (Polyetheretherketone) is high‑performance semi‑crystalline thermoplastic engineering polymer. It can be supplied as unfilled virgin grade or modified with carbon fiber, glass fiber and PTFE fillers. PEEK combines outstanding mechanical strength, high‑temperature stability and broad chemical resistance, widely used for high‑load sealing components, backup rings and precision mechanical parts under harsh operating conditions.
Key Physical & Mechanical Properties
- Density: 1.30‑1.44 g/cm³; filled grades show higher density
- Hardness (Shore D): 85‑92, rigid high‑strength polymer
- Tensile Strength: 85‑160 MPa; carbon‑filled PEEK delivers higher tensile value
- Elongation at Break: 15‑50 %; much lower elongation than elastomer materials
- Compressive Strength: 110‑220 MPa, excellent anti‑creep performance under sustained pressure
- Tear Strength: High tear resistance, suitable for anti‑extrusion backup ring service
- Coefficient of Friction: 0.20‑0.40; PTFE filled PEEK achieves lower friction for dynamic seals
- Abrasion Resistance: Superior wear‑resistant performance versus most engineering plastics
Thermal Properties
- Continuous Operating Temperature:‑50 °C ~ +250 °C
- Short‑term peak temperature: Up to 310 °C
- Melting Point: 343 °C
- Glass Transition Temperature(Tg): 143 °C
- Heat Deflection Temperature HDT @1.82 MPa: 150‑260 °C, filler reinforced grades gain higher HDT
- Thermal Expansion Coefficient: Low thermal expansion rate, superior dimensional stability during temperature cycling
- Thermal Conductivity: 0.25‑0.80 W/(m·K); carbon filled PEEK improves thermal conductivity
Chemical & Media Resistance
PEEK exhibits excellent resistance to most organic solvents, oils, greases, fuels, dilute and concentrated acids, alkalis. It maintains stable performance under high‑temperature fluid immersion.
Limitations: Attacked by strong concentrated sulfuric acid at elevated temperature. Not resistant to some high‑temperature halogenated solvents. Good hydrolysis resistance for long‑term hot water and steam exposure, suitable for steam‑related equipment.
Virgin PEEK VS Filled PEEK Grades
Virgin PEEK: Balanced strength and toughness, best chemical resistance, general‑purpose precision machined parts.
Carbon fiber filled PEEK: Higher compressive strength, improved wear resistance and thermal conductivity, ideal for high‑load backup rings and dynamic seal components.
PTFE‑carbon compound PEEK: Low friction coefficient, optimized for sliding and reciprocating sealing applications.
Typical Industrial Applications
PEEK rods and sheets are mainly processed by CNC machining; also available for injection moulding. Typical finished parts: seal backup rings, valve seats, thrust washers, piston components, high‑pressure gaskets and anti‑extrusion sealing elements. Widely used in petroleum equipment, hydraulic‑pneumatic systems, chemical processing, instrumentation and aerospace‑grade industrial sealing.
