Bonded Washer Installation & Torque Guide

Bonded washers
(Dowty washers) are core sealing components for threaded joints and hydraulic ports. Even high-quality industrial bonded washer products will fail to work properly with incorrect operation. Improper installation and unreasonable bonded washer torque specification are the main causes of oil leakage, gas leakage and equipment malfunction. This guide shares standardized installation steps and professional torque standards to help users achieve stable sealing with high pressure bonded washer applications.

Bonded washer installation guide

1. Pre-installation Inspection

Before installation, check the surface flatness of the fitting port to ensure no burrs, scratches, rust or impurities. Clean the thread and sealing surface completely. Damaged or deformed bonded washers must be replaced directly, because tiny cracks and degumming will lead to sealing failure under pressure.

2. Correct Installation Method

Place the bonded washer flat on the sealing surface, keep the rubber layer fully fitted with the pressing surface, and ensure no skew, folding or offset. During screwing, keep uniform vertical force, avoid lateral force and eccentric compression, which are the main causes of rubber layer damage.

3. Standard Torque Principle

Too small torque will cause insufficient compression and loose sealing; excessive torque will lead to rubber over-compression, permanent deformation and accelerated aging. For metric standard bonded washers, medium uniform torque is recommended. For high-pressure hydraulic systems, follow equipment assembly standards and avoid over-tightening.

4. Common Installation Mistakes to Avoid

  • Reusing old bonded washers after disassembly (rubber fatigue and deformation cause leakage)
  • Skewed installation and one-sided compression leading to uneven sealing gaps
  • Excessive tightening torque causing rubber cracking and permanent damage
  • Installing with dust, iron filings and impurities on the sealing surface

5. Replacement Cycle Suggestion

Regular replacement of bonded washers is critical to avoid unexpected Dowty washer leakage and equipment downtime. For standard static hydraulic sealing under normal temperature and pressure, NBR bonded washer products deliver stable performance with a 1–2 year service life. For harsh working conditions including dynamic sealing, high pressure, continuous vibration and frequent equipment startup, replacement every 6–12 months is strongly recommended to prevent sealing failure caused by rubber fatigue, compression creep and torque relaxation.
For high-temperature, corrosive or special fuel contact scenarios, premium FKM Dowty washer or EPDM bonded washers are ideal choices with better anti-aging performance and longer service life. Adhering to a reasonable replacement cycle effectively reduces equipment maintenance costs and ensures long-term stable operation of industrial hydraulic and mechanical systems.
