Hydraulic rod seals are critical components in cylinder operation, acting as the primary barrier that contains fluid and maintains pressure. This guide explores their key aspects.

Primary Function: A rod seal's main job is to prevent hydraulic fluid from leaking out of the cylinder as the rod retracts. It also keeps out contamination, ensuring system efficiency and longevity.

Main Types:

  • Single-Acting Seals: Designed to seal pressure from one direction only. Common types include U-cups, V-rings, and metric rod seals.

  • Double-Acting Seals: Effective at sealing pressure from both in-stroke and out-stroke directions. Examples include Glyd rings and symmetrical seal profiles.

  • Wiper/Scraper Seals: Mounted externally to scrape dirt, moisture, and other contaminants off the rod before it enters the system.

  • Buffer Seals: Positioned before the primary rod seal to protect it from high-pressure spikes and pressure intensification.

Common Failure Causes:

  • Abrasion: Caused by contaminated fluid or a damaged rod surface, leading to wear grooves.

  • Extrusion: Occurs under high pressure, damaging the seal's geometry if anti-extrusion rings are missing or undersized.

  • Chemical Incompatibility: Swelling, softening, or cracking of the seal material from incompatible hydraulic fluid.

  • Improper Installation: Nicks, cuts, or twists during assembly can cause immediate leakage.

  • Heat Degradation: Excessive temperatures can harden the elastomer, causing loss of elasticity and cracking.

Choosing the right seal material (like polyurethane or PTFE), ensuring correct installation, and maintaining clean fluid are essential for maximizing rod seal life and preventing cylinder failure.
